Key Challenges

To create a situation where parking places and tree pits must be combined. Bad soil conditions for the trees.

Solution

To create a situation where parking places and tree pits must be combined.

  • A new layer of trees sand is used as a growth area.
  • The ArboRaft units will collect the traffic pressure and prevent the trees sand from compacting.
  • In the ArboRaft units a very rich substrates is applied, to provide an extra good soil condition in the growth area.
  • The air layer in the top of the ArboRaft units will prevent the roots from damaging the pavement.

The Result

The ArboRaft structure accommodates the vertical and lateral forces from vehicular loading; whilst the soil remains uncompacted.

  • The air layer in the top of the ArboRaft units will prevent the roots from damaging the pavement.
  • The trees grow very well and grow in the coming decades will be easy.
  • The trees use the rich soil in the units; the amount of root area can therefore be, compared with the use trees sand, smaller to reach the same tree format.
  • The physical soil properties in the trees sand stay by the hedging with the ArboRaft units more favorable for root growth.
  • In particular, the lower soil compaction has a positive effect.
  • The use of the Sandwich Construction prevents damage of the pavements by the tree roots.
